Blue Light Exposure

What effect does blue light have on the skin?

Blue light, also known as high energy visible (HEV) light, is a color in the visible light spectrum that we can see.  We get blue light from the sun but we also get it from our digital screens like computers, laptops, smartphones, and fluorescent and LED lights.

Let’s face it…. our screen time has increased astronomically – video conferencing not to mention TikTok and Hulu binging.  Unfortunately, blue light induces oxidative stress on the skin which stimulates the production of free radicals. This can lead to the acceleration of aging, including wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of skin elasticity due to collagen breakdown. Blue light has also been shown to cause redness, swelling, and the dreaded hyperpigmentation.

What’s a person to do?
Use the lowest dimmest setting possible and reduce your screen time.  What else?  We’ve been taught to wear sunscreen for UV protection and environmental stressors like pollution.  But did you know it can help with blue light too?  Using sunscreens with iron oxide helps against visible light.

Ingredients that help!
To repair your skin caused by damage, use retinol (boost production of elastin and collagen), Vitamin C (a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals, and inhibit melanin production), and Niacinamide (tighten pores, improve skin texture, soften fine line and wrinkles. And improves skin barrier)
